Competa is some 650 metres above sea level and is located at the foot of the Tejeda and Almijara Sierra mountain range; most famous for its production of Competa and Malaga wine. The breathtaking scenery on the way up from the coast is well worth the drive in its own right and is only 40 minutes away from the coast at Torrox or Nerja.
Competa is probably the best example of an Axarquian working mountain village. To this day the entire village still remains very dependent on the production of its wine, where the main crop forms the backbone of its economy, its way of life as well prolonging its rich wine producing history.
The narrow cobbled streets and whitewashed buildings high up in the Sierra create a unique atmosphere filled with the aromatic smell of olive wood fires in the winter and jasmine and " Dama de le Noche " blossom in the summer months. Take a tapas in the main square or sample the local produce from the market. Competa is simply not to be missed and is generally accepted as one of the most scenic and picturesque villages in the high Sierra.
